Dodgers to play pair of exhibitions in Taiwan

While their Cactus League foes are training in Arizona, the Dodgers will take a few days to play in a country where they have a deep influence.
On March 13 and 14, the Dodgers will be suiting up in Taiwan, where they'll play two games against a team from the Chinese Professional Baseball League, Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association announced in Taipei on Saturday.
The two-game set will not be part of the 2010 Spring Training schedule. Los Angeles' CPBL opponent has not been identified.
"I would like to thank the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Major League Baseball Players Association and the Chinese Professional Baseball League for making this historic event possible," MLB Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig said in a statement. "Major League Baseball is committed to the continued international growth of our game, and we are excited to have the opportunity to bring these games to the great fans in Taiwan."
This will be the Dodgers' second trip to Taiwan, and it will mark the third time since 2008 that a big league team has traveled to Asia.
In 1993, the Dodgers became the first Major League team to play in Taiwan, when they competed against a team of CPBL All-Stars. Then, in March of '08, the Dodgers and Padres played two Spring Training games in Beijing, marking the first Major League games played in China.
Later that month, the Red Sox and Athletics opened the regular season with a two-game series in Tokyo.
"We're very excited to return to Taiwan and continue to strengthen the relationships that date back to the 1980s," Dodger owner Frank McCourt said in a statement. "The Dodgers believe wholeheartedly in the development of the game of baseball internationally, and we have many fans in Taiwan who we look forward to seeing in March."
The Dodgers' influence in Taiwan is unparalleled in the big leagues.
In 1996, they formed a working agreement with the Sinon Bulls of the CPBL, and the Bulls eventually became the first team from Taiwan to train in Latin America when they visited the Dodgers' facility in the Dominican Republic in 1997; they returned again in '98, '99 and 2003.
The Dodgers then became the first Major League club to sign a Taiwanese high school player when they inked left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo in 2000.
Of the six Taiwan-born players to appear in the Major Leagues, four have played for the Dodgers: Kuo, Chin-Feng Chen, Chin-Lung Hu and Chin-hui Tsao.
"On behalf of all Major League players, I want to thank everyone involved in the effort for the opportunity to bring Major League Baseball to the people of Taiwan," MLBPA executive director Michael Weiner said in a statement. "The Dodgers players look forward to playing before some of the world's greatest baseball fans."

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The worldwide ranking of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport for 2009 dropped to 27, according to a report released by the Airports Council International (AIC) on Wednesday.
The top five airports are all located in Asia. Incheon International Airport in South Korea was ranked at No. 1 for the fifth year, while Singapore Changi Airport was second and Hong Kong International Airport was third, followed by Beijing International Airport and Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International in India, according to the AIC report in which data was collected from monthly questionnaires completed by passengers at 118 airports in 45 countries in 2009.
In 2008, Taoyuan International Airport became the sixth airport in the world to provide free wireless Internet services for passengers and therefore ranked No. 18 in that year.
However, Taoyuan International Airport's global ranking dropped to No. 27 for 2009, which might result from the expensive price of the beef noodle at the airport, the renovation of Terminal One, and the establishing Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) system to the airport, explained Li Lung-wen, head of the Civil Aeronautics Administration.
The AIC report described the trolleys at Taoyuan International Airport as the major reason for its dissatisfying services. Statistics also showed that problems such as the limited trolleys and the trolleys' bad condition top the list of the complaints from the passengers.
It is hard for passengers either to find a trolley to use near the baggage carousel or to find a trolley in a good condition. A passenger not only complained about the failure to find a useable trolley across Terminal Two when arriving in Taiwan before the Chinese New Year's Eve, but also revealed other problems such as the slow speed of baggage traffic and the lack of management of the airport's taxis, local media reported.
There are 1,700 trolleys in Terminal One, 1,700 in Terminal Two, and 600 in the duty-free shops; the total number should be enough for the airport's yearly 21.6 million passengers. Due to the limited ground staff to relocate to trolleys scattered around the airport, failure to efficiently drag trolleys back in place is inevitable, the Civil Aeronautics Administration responded.
The airport also said it is hoping to provide passengers with brand-new trolleys in the middle of this year.
Better services at the airport will be provided after Terminal One is fully rebuilt and the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system to the airport is completed and thus the ranking will be likely to rise, said Liu Chuang-Sheng, the deputy director of Taoyuan airport.
On the other hand, Taoyuan Airport was No.1 in 2008 in the number of yearly passengers but it fell to No. 2 in 2009, with a total of between 15 million and 25 million passengers, surpassed by the Baltimore/Washington Airport in the U.S.

REDMOND, Wash. — Feb. 22, 2010 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that it has signed a patent cross-license agreement with Amazon.com Inc. The agreement provides each company with access to the other’s patent portfolio and covers a broad range of products and technology, including coverage for Amazon’s popular e-reading device, Kindle™, which employs both open source and Amazon’s proprietary software components, and Amazon’s use of Linux-based servers. Although specific terms of the agreement are confidential, Microsoft indicated that Amazon.com will pay Microsoft an undisclosed amount of money under the agreement.

The licensing agreement is another example of the important role IP plays in ensuring a healthy and vibrant IT ecosystem. Since Microsoft launched its IP licensing program in December 2003, the company has entered into more than 600 licensing agreements and continues to develop programs that make it possible for customers, partners and competitors to access its IP portfolio.
